I agree.. it seems to be only teenage girls percieved as those who SI.
But I know 3 males, all of different ages but all at school who SI, and i think it's pretty likely there are more.
Also those who are older (not just males) are lest socially accepted as SIers.
I think this is unfair.. we need to raise awareness and that way those who need it will feel they have a greater option of help.

:eek:Is this like spousal abuse? You know where men think that it makes them look weak so they won't admit to it? I feel so sorry that a man should have to endure this alone. It is painful enough with support, but alone. Not even confiding in a friend? Tough. They have my sympathy.

It's good to see male SI focused upon. Sadly I think it's far more common than we may ever know.

I am male with SI your right it is something that has certain stigmer about it. The fact that it appears to be wrongly associated with girls and has horrible names like emo attached with it makes it a hard subject to talk about. It's good there are places like this that provide practical information with no judgement!

I've self harmed for nearly 30 years. I object to the media's portrayal that Self harm is a teenager problem. It seems to me that there is a lot of sympathy and help for young people but nothing for adults. It seems that we should grow up and pull our socks up.

I started harming at 18, I am a cutter and I also have an obsessional shaving thing which I believe is connected with my Self Harm issues. I always feel relieved when I cut or shave and I think it has probably saved my life. However I really struggle with the shame and guilt I feel. Also I have had very negative responses to my cutting. Once I had to go to A & E and they stitched me up without numbing the area around my cut. The doctor said I obviously enjoyed pain and it might teach me a lesson. I've lost two jobs because of shavig my head, that was back in the 90s.

I would love to find a way to cope better that was more loving to myself, but everything I've tried hasn't worked.

Im a Male who SI's and i was happy that the awareness of men who SI because it seems to be a taboo, due to a man showing emotions they might think that people see it as a sign of weakness.
